For many pets, a vet visit means a carrier, a car ride, strange smells and unfamiliar hands. It is no surprise that some arrive frightened. Fear Free care is a structured way of reducing that fear at every step.
Why fear matters medically
A frightened pet has a faster heart rate, higher blood pressure and higher temperature, and stress can change some blood results. Fear also hides pain and makes examinations harder and less accurate. Over time, pets who dread the clinic visit less often, so problems are found later.
What Fear Free certification involves
Fear Free is a professional certification for veterinary teams. Team members complete assessed training on reading body language, gentle handling, environment design and, when needed, calming medication, and renew it every year. At Pet Well, every team member is certified.
What you will notice at a Fear Free visit
- A calmer waiting area, with cats and dogs kept apart where possible
- Pheromone diffusers and non-slip surfaces
- Examinations where your pet is most comfortable, sometimes on the floor or in your lap
- Plenty of tasty treats and breaks when needed
- Notes on your pet’s preferences, kept on record for next time
What you can do at home
- Leave the carrier out with a blanket and treats so it becomes a safe den
- Practise short car rides that end somewhere fun
- Bring your pet a little hungry so treats work well, unless fasting is needed
- Tell us when you book if your pet is anxious
Happy visits
For very anxious pets we offer short happy visits with no procedures, just treats and attention, so the clinic becomes familiar and positive.
