Spay & Neuter

Spay and neuter with careful planning

Spaying and neutering prevent unplanned litters and reduce the risk of several serious diseases. We plan the timing around your pet’s breed, size and health rather than a single fixed age.

When to come in

  • Your puppy or kitten is approaching adolescence and you want advice on timing
  • You have adopted an adult pet that has not been neutered
  • You have noticed heat cycles, marking or roaming behaviour

What it covers

Spay (females)

Removal of the ovaries and usually the uterus under general anaesthesia, which prevents heat cycles and pregnancy and greatly reduces the risk of womb infection.

Neuter (males)

Removal of the testicles under general anaesthesia, which prevents breeding and testicular disease and can reduce some hormone-driven behaviours.

What to expect

We start with a pre-surgical consultation to examine your pet, discuss timing and answer your questions. On the day, your pet is admitted in the morning, receives pain relief and anaesthesia tailored to them, and is monitored by a dedicated nurse throughout. Most pets go home the same afternoon with a written aftercare plan.

We see your pet again for a wound check a few days later, and you can contact us at any point during recovery.

Our approach

The right age to neuter differs between a small cat and a large-breed dog. We follow current evidence on timing, use modern pain management and keep your pet calm with gentle, low-stress handling from admission to discharge.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best age to spay or neuter?

Cats are commonly neutered from around four to six months. For dogs, the ideal age depends on breed and expected adult size, and larger breeds may benefit from waiting. We will recommend a plan for your pet.

How long is recovery?

Most pets are back to normal within 10 to 14 days. They need rest, lead walks only and a cone or recovery suit to protect the wound.

Will my pet gain weight?

Neutering can lower energy needs, so we review diet and portion sizes afterwards to keep weight healthy.
